WONDER IN THE WANDERING
Immersive Show: Wonder in the Wandering
Face to face with a botched thesis film and six-week deadline, Wonder in the Wandering became my introduction to Immersive work entirely by accident. Entering through the stage door, audience members were ushered onto a blank stage to watch a film projected before them of a little boy running away from home. They watch as he crosses fields of darkness and once coming up over a hill the same beautiful circus lights seen on screen illuminate behind the curtain before them. The audience crosses through the curtain into a space completely transformed. Tent by tent, they make their way through the circus meeting characters and aiding in various tasks and mysteries.
Wonder in the Wandering was quite literally held together with safety pins and duct tape. At the time of its conception and performance, I had not and would not hear the term Immersive Theatre for another year. It was a medium I fell into completely by accident, driven by fear, desperation, and several sleepless nights. All of that said, I will always remember standing in the darkened balcony high above the show and recognizing the work I was put on this planet to create. Wonder in the Wandering will always be that accidental wormhole that seemed all wrong but came to be completely right.
